ASSA ABLOY goes green at secondary school

ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, a division of ASSA ABLOY, has supplied products for a state-of-the-art, low-carbon school development on the Isle of Wight.

Cowes Secondary School is undergoing a £30million regeneration scheme to create a sustainable learning environment. Featuring a ‘bio-diverse’ roof, which will double as a mini nature reserve and outdoor learning environment, the school will also supply its own heating and hot water, thanks to its on-site biomass plant, as well as maximising the use of natural ventilation and light.

ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions has supplied a full product specification, including products from ASSA, UNION and ASSA ABLOY, to ensure those who enjoy the new environmentally friendly facilities, such as the innovative ‘Green Gym’, are kept safe and secure.

ASSA hinges, Modular Locks, floor springs, door magnets and magnetic hold-opens feature in 410 doorsets throughout the innovative new build. In addition, a number of ASSA Flexcore Plus cylinders feature on internal doors, offering patent-protected security, as well as pick-resistance, and bump-resistance in accordance with British Standards. ASSA’s Scanflex door furniture has also been integrated, complimenting the clean, contemporary design of the secondary school.

ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions has provided hardware that ensures the school adheres to the latest industry standards, creating a safe learning environment. A number of ASSA ABLOY branded DC500A door closers have been used, the cam motion functionality enabling doors to be easily opened by younger students, or disabled users, assisting in fulfilling the duties required under The Equality Act, specifically BS8300 and Approved Document M of The Building Regulations.

UNION panic hardware has been installed on doorsets throughout the development to provide practical security solutions for emergency exits and escape routes. Assisting building owners in meeting the requirements under BS EN 179, the panic hardware features Pullman latches for ease of use and safety.

Allan Thomson, Commercial Manager for ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, said:

“Working on the sustainable school in Cowes has been immensely interesting, where, besides from the exciting and innovative installations, we had to ensure the school still adhering to safety standards.

“ASSA ABLOY is ecologically motivated, both at our own factory, and within our customers’ projects. We supply durable, long-lasting products, helping to reduce our customers’ impact on the environment by increasing a product’s lifecycle and minimising waste, as well as the impact of continual repair and maintenance.

“Having worked with the contractor, PIHL UK a number of times before, it was easy to identify and specify the right products for the work, and we knew we were on the same page with the environmental concerns.”

Aird Buist, UK Director for PIHL, added:

“There were a huge number of considerations with the build at Cowes, from environmental impact, to the impact on the local landscape, as well as safety and security. Having worked with ASSA ABLOY before, we were assured of our choice for security specification, in a build that allowed us to integrate our Scandinavian heritage in design and material choice, and provide a truly bespoke education hub in Cowes.”

ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions comprises ASSA ABLOY door closers alongside the well-known product brands of UNION, ASSA, Adams Rite, Trimec, Pemko and Valli & Valli, and is part of ASSA ABLOY UK.
